Nearly finished this book; set in the time of Elizabeth the 1st, not quite a page-turner, as in Walpole`s other novels, Judith Paris, Rougue Herries, etc or any of the other books that make up The `Herries Chronicles` A good read none-the-less. The main characters are brothers Robin and Nicholas Herries- Robin is a bit of a sap imho, while Nicholas is, again imho, rather slow on the uptake (dim), but that`s just my opinion! There`s a whole chapter entirely devoted to the execution of Mary Queen of Scots and one on the torture of Robin Herries. You`ll like that, I liked it so much I took it to bed to read. Actually, truth be told, I have been reading this book in bed, but skipping the - how shall I day - the more `gruesome ` chapters for a more appropriate time of day! Don`t want to add to the nightmare that I`m currently experiencing (corvid-19). So, in a nutshell, that`s `The Bright Pavilions ` by Hugh Walpole.
